Happy New Year 2012!!!!

Happy New Year!!
(or Happy Hogmany as my Scottish friends would say)

2011 is over and 2012 is here.

I had a pretty good year last year, despite all kinds of unexpected happenings.  I gained a new sister-in-law, a new brother-in-law and two new nieces.  The kids made huge advances academically.  We figured out a lot of food/behavior/social issues with the children.  We started lots of home projects (unfortunatly, none of them finished!).  We bought a new car.  We bought a new furnace.  We established an emergency fund.  We spent the emergency fund!  Started it over.

It was a good year.

However, like everyone else on the planet, at this start of the year my mind turns to the future.  To what I want to accomplish this coming year.  To what lies ahead.

I've never been a good one at making and then keeping resolutions.  I'd rather make goals...something that I can work toward and keep working toward.  I don't feel so bad then if I don't accomplish it fully.

This year, one of my huge goals is to get more organized.  In the home and at work.  Another goal is to get the family involved in said organization.  Here are a few steps I am taking to help with this goal:
  • Employing a new Household Notebook.  It's still in the works, but I will blog more about it when it is finished and in use so I can report on how well it works.
  • Starting a new laundry system.  The days of the week system I was using is not working out well for us at all.  Trying something new.
  • New Chore Charts for the kids.  Something a bit more visual for them to see.
  • Utilizing my Motivated Moms calendar more for a cleaning system.  When I use it, it works SOO well.  When I don't....well, yeah.
  • Joining in two online challenges to help me stay motivated and organized: Mama Jenn's Missons of the Month and the 52 Weeks to an Organized House challenge.
  • And of course, continuing with meal planning and linking to the Menu Plan Mondays.
Another goal of mine is work on spiritual/family/emotional life.  I sometimes feel like in the craziness of our lives, we become disconnected from each other and from God.  We need to, as a family, re-establish this and nuture it in ourselves and our family members and our community.  Here are some steps we'll be doing to work on this goal:
  • Eat most meals at the table to together.  Learn and say new meal blessings.  Use manners and practice politeness at mealtimes.
  • Have a family day/night each week where we play games or do an activity together.
  • Establish a family motto/rules and post them in the house.
  • Read.  Alone and to each other.
  • Go to church and Sunday School every week (we already do this, but I think it is important to have it as a guideline.)
  • Volunteer as a family at least twice this year.
  • Personally, to meditate/pray every day.  To read books that will enhance my spiritual growth and connections.
  • Celebrate the every day.
And finally my last goal is a fitness goal.  Last year started off strong with my running a half marathon, but quickly slid downhill in to doing the bare minimum of workouts.  Outside of my dance classes, I really don't do much of anything.  I need to get back into gear and work. I would like to lose a few (or more) pounds of myself and to just feel better about the way I look. To help with this I will:
  • Walk at least three-four times a week.  Adding in running as I feel.
  • Do yoga at least three-four times a week.
  • Teach dance twice a week (already in progress)
  • Work on findng "clean" methods of personal care - shampoos/conditioners/face wash/deoderent/etc
  • Eat a bit more heathy
So....here's to a bang up 2012!  Working on meeting life goals that will lead to less craziness, more peace and happier families!!!!!

Royal Wedding Fun

I don't know if anyone else out there is as excited about the upcoming Royal Wedding as I am, but boy am I ever excited!  I can totally remember getting up and watching Princess Diana's wedding, as well as Fergie's wedding with my mom.  Maybe it's because my family has always had an interest in British life and royalty.  Maybe it's just because it's cool to see a beautiful woman become a real-life princess.  Or maybe, just maybe it's because WAY WAY WAY WAY back in our family line, I had an ancestor with royal blood!  (Mom found that out once doing geneology - My gram wore a tiara for the rest of the week and proclaimed that she always knew she was royal!!!! )

But whatever the reason, I am beyond stoked to get up early and watch as Will and Kate take their vows this Friday.  I plan on taping the wedding as well, so whatever I miss while getting the kids ready for school, packing lunches and the like, I can see later.

In fact, Thing #1 and I are planning a Royal Tea Party and Wedding Watching Party for Friday night (or maybe Saturday morning, depending on how Mr. CrazyLife feels about it!)

We're going to dress up and wear hats.  Drink tea.  Have tea cakes and sandwiches.  Maybe we'll even make some "royal" cupcakes like these from the Disney Family Fun site.

On the Disney Family Fun site there are lots of other fun activities to do with your children to celebrate the Royal Wedding.  How about a Kate Middleton paper doll dress-up?  Or print out a tiara like the one Kate may wear in the wedding for your little princesses to wear at your celebration.  It's a definite must-see if you are planning a royal celebration!

There's fun stuff on there for us moms as well: Check out the fabulous headdresses and shoes.  Bake up some of the princess cookies and cakes.  Book a romantic get-away.  Learn how to feel like a princess every day.  It's all on there.  Plus, check out the Disney Princess inspired wedding dresses - they are to die for!!  If I was getting married again, I'd totally pick out the Belle dress.

A Cute Easter Idea - Jelly Bean Prayer Jars

Saw this over on Mama Jenn.
What a great way to share the message of Easter!!
Jelly Bean Prayer Jars

I wish I would have seen these earlier.  They would have made great Easter gifts for the kids' Sunday School teachers.  Oh well . . . we'll save in the file for "next year."  I bet even our Youth Group kids would like to make these.  Thanks, Mama Jenn for sharing this great idea!

Little Leaps of Love

I'm joining in on the Little Leaps of Love challenge held over at No Ordinary Moments for the month of February.

It seems like a fantastic way to celebrate the month of Valentine's Day and to show my family in lots of little ways the love I have for them.  I don't know yet what they challenges are, but I can't wait to find out!

Join me in the challenge - there are some great prizes too - to show your family a little love!

A Celebration

Growing up in a family that was very active in the Scottish-American community and as a Highland Dancer, January 25th was always an important "holiday" in my life.  For those of you who don't know, January 25th is Robert Burn's Day - a day to celebrate the national poet of Scotland.

Now, as a grown-up with my own family, I like to incorporate parts of those traditions into our life.  However, I haven't danced at a Burn's Night supper in years (although I'm hopeful that my own dancers from my dance school will get to next year, maybe?).  And there is no way in heck that my kids are going to even try a piece of haggis, let alone eat an entire meal of it!  But I'd like to keep up the tradition.

Last night (the 25th) was a busy night for the CrazyLife family.  Dance class, typing up semester exams for Mr. CrazyLife, homework, dance practices, spelling words, baths, etc.  So we didn't get a chance to celebrate anything other than bedtime when everyone was in bed and the house was quiet!

Tonight, we'll be trying some things.  No haggis in our house - I won't eat it either!  But I do have some oatmeal scones, shortbread, and we'll have sausage with tatties and neeps (potatos with mashed turnip).  I want to read some poems with the kids and tell them about Robert Burns.  And of course, we'll put on some pipe music and do a Highland Fling or two! (a standard around our house any night of the week!)

And for those of you who would like to enjoy your own Robert Burn's celebrations, check out a few of these links for some ideas, recipes, poems and songs, and much more!

New Year, New Look, New Me (kinda)

So how can it be that we're already a week into 2011?  This year is flying by so quickly already!!  So

Happy New Year
(belatedly, as usual!)

As you can see, I've changed things up a bit for 2011.  A new background, which is pretty exciting because I totally figured out how to do it all on my own!  However, I can't figure out how to add the header, which would totally complete the look, so anyone who knows about that stuff and can help - that would be awesome!

I've also decided that this year I'm going to focus on ME.  That's right - ME.  I've spent the greater portion of the last eight years concentrating on other people and putting other people first.  Now, mind you, those little people that take up a lot of that attention are still going to be getting their fair share and so is Mr. CrazyLife, but I'm going to take MY life back.  Do things for ME.

I'm working on a vision board for 2011.  I've always made "goals" for the year, but always, always, always forget them pretty quickly.  So a vision board should be great - keep those goals in front of me all year.  Do you make vision boards?  What are your goals for this year?

I'll post mine as soon as it's done.  I've included family, home, health and career goals on it.  Now I have to find a place to put it where I will see it everyday.  Plus, Mr. CrazyLife thinks I'm, well crazy for doing it that way, so I need to find a place where he won't laugh about it all the time.  Men!  =)

So welcome 2011!

**Happy Deer Day**

Happy Opening Day!!
(or as we call it at work - the Deer Day Holiday!!)

Today is the opening day of rifle deer hunting season in Michigan.  And to celebrate, Momma Crazylife did not have to go to school today.  Woo Hoo!!

Since so many of our kids and techers take off to go hunting, we almost always have the day off.  Otherwise, who knows if we'd have enough kids to count the day?

And even more exciting - Things #1 & #2 and Mr. Crazylife all had to go to school today.  So I get to be at home with the two little ones.  We've been having fun shopping and doing our preschool work.

I love days off!!!

Elf Magic

It's that time of year again.....
it's almost time for Holly, Mistletoe, Ginger and Pepper
to come back for their yearly visit!!
The kids can't wait and frankly, neither can I!!

Every year for the past three years, our magic elves have joined us at Christmastime.  They are fun to have around as they are always up to mischief in the middle of the night (kinda sounds like four other little munchkins I know!)

They always arrive on December 1st, bringing us an Advent wreath and calendar.  Sometimes they do crazy things in the middle of the night like taking a bath in the kitchen sink full of marshmallows or making flour "snow" angels on the kitchen table while baking us cookies.  One time they decided the house wasn't decorated enough, so they made paper snowflakes and hung them all over the house - and then they left all the little cut up pieces of paper out for us to clean up!  Our favorite event was when they staged a "snow"ball fight under the Christmas tree with cotton balls.  Crazy elves!!

But they also do things that remind us of the real reason for the season.  After all, Santa is just part of the picture and he wants us to remember what Christmas is really about too.  So he has taught all his elves the Christmas story and they help remind us and share it with us.

Our elves have dressed up as Saint Lucia and her entourage, bringing us sweet buns and a bible story.  They have gone to church to help out with the Christmas pagent.  And every year, on Christmas morning, we find them kneeling at the manger of our creche.

We love our elves (you can find some of their North Pole friends here) and look forward to them coming every year.
We can't wait to see what crazy things they do this year!!!

Vacation Time

We just got back from our annual summer vacation.  This year we went into Michigan's Upper Peninsula to the far western edges of the state.  It was about a 12+ hour drive for us.  My mother-in-law grew up in the area up there, so every year her family holds it's annual Northwoods 4th reunion.  It was a lot of fun.  We camped in a tent with 4 kids, so that was interesting.  Saw lots of waterfalls and beautiful sunsets.  Went swimming in Lake Superior and even climbed to the top of the world's tallest ski jump.  We picked wild raspberries and had fresh fish fry, right out of the lake!

Here's a small picture recap of the highlights of our little trip.  Hope you enjoy them as much as we enjoyed our family holiday!!

Memorial Day 2010

As you celebrate and visit with your family and friends this Memorial Day, please take a few moments to remember those who have served in our country's armed forces and given thier lives in sacrifice to our country.  Remember also, those who still serve.  Let us honor them all.

Father's Day Ideas....

Father's Day is coming up soon and I always tend to do last minute things.  Last year it was a Tshirt from Walmart with Snoopy on a motercycle that said, "Big Daddy."  It was cute and Mr. CrazyLife wears it all the time.  But I'd like to do something a little cuter and more meaningful this year.  So I started searching online.  I love online research!!  =)

I found this and can totally see doing it!!  It would be simple and easy and we'd just have to find a time when Daddy's workboots were unused and he was out of the house (that would be the tricky part - maybe we'll use an old pair of boots)  I'm going to look for a different quote to use, I think.  This one is cute, but I want something a bit different.  Thanks, Amber at The McIllece Spot for a fantastic idea!!

A Hike in the Woods

Over the Easter holiday, the family and I drove to south-eastern Ohio to visit Grammy and Papa.  It was a quick trip as the wee things and I had to be back at school on Easter Monday, although Mr. Crazy Life has had this week off.  We did all kinds of fun things while there - we visited Amish Country, we colored eggs, we played with the kitties and Uncle Robbie and Aunt Bethie, and we took about a 3 mile hike in the woods.

This is Dysart Woods.  It's a 55 acre tract owned by the Ohio University.  It is the largest area of virgin oak forest in the state of Ohio.  It's absolutly beautiful!  We took the red trail, which apparently is a bit harder.  It was about 200' downhill, then up, then down, then up again and then a quarter mile back to the parking lot along an unpaved road.

The trees there are gigantic!  It was a lot like walking in the upper peninsula of Michigan, but a lot hotter and muggier!  The kids really enjoyed scrambling along the logs and climbing.  Thing #4 was trying her hardest to walk and catch up to the bigger kids.

Mr. Crazy Life and myself preferred to show our environmentalist sides by becoming tree huggers.

Auntie Beth, Papa and Miss Jackie came along for the hike.  It was a beautiful morning and a beautiful hike.  And the kids slept like a dream that night!

Easter Eggs

This year, for the second time, we decided to try dying Easter eggs the natural way.  And by that I mean using plants and spices for the coloring.  Last year we used regular white eggs and had moderate results.  We liked how it turned out, but the colors were kind of, well, blah.

This year we tried again and used our brown eggs (and some white ones my mom had sitting around).  What a difference!  They turned out really nice.  They aren't bright, like the dyes you get from the store, but they sure are pretty!

(sorry for the picture quality....it's off my blackberry)

From the top row:  Dark Purple egg (dark brown to start) - grape juce
Brownish egg - black tea with red sugar crystals
Green egg - spinich

Next row:  All three Yellow Eggs - tumeric spice

Next two rows: All six orange eggs - yellow onion skins

Next row:  Yellow Egg - saffron spice
Reddish egg - cranberry juice
Green egg - celery seed

Bottom row: All three Green eggs - spinich

Pretty, no?
