Date Night

Mr. CrazyLife and I have decreed this Friday, July 15th as an offical DATE NIGHT.   It's been quite a while since we had an offical date night so I'm quite excited.  You know the kind where you get a babysitter and actually leave the house without four squabbling children in tow?  Our date night lately have consisted of wrestling said squabbling children to sleep and then popping in a movie, cuddling on the couch and promptly crashing into sleep ourselves.  It's about time we took a night off.

And as some people might know . . . there is a release of a certain movie this Friday. Part 2 of a specific movie to be exact.  And we're super excited.  We're big Harry Potter fans from way back and can't wait to see how the movies end up.  In fact, we found that the theater in our town is running a double feature of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 AND Part 2 back to back on Friday!  Yippeee!!!!

I might have to sneak in some Bertie Botts Every Flavor Beans or something in honor of the event.

In the meantime, I'm hoping to hit all the previous movies this week to remind/catch up with the series.  I probably should really re-read them all, but let's face it.  Time and the essence just aren't with me this week.  Not to mention that Thing #1 is BEGGING to read Harry Potter #4 and I'm trying to hold her off for a bit (at least until our Hogwarts summer is over!).  If I started re-reading them, there'd be no holding her back!

So a Harry Potter movie-a-thon is on order for the week.....and I might or might not have some Harry Potter recipes set aside in honor of that as well.  Just not Butterbeer - check out this post for more on that Epic Fail!

A Hogwart's Adventure and Frienly Wednesday

We started our adventures at Hogwart's School of Witchcraft and Wizardry this week.  And it's been a blast so far!!!  If you're interested in following along, you can read moe here:

In honor of the Harry Potter adventures we're having, I'm post a recipe I came across while searching.  As all us Harry Potter fans know, Butterbeer is the premiere drink of the Wizarding world.  Mr. CrazyLife's cousin has a recipe for it that is quite good served warm or used as in a "Butterbeer" float (ala root beer float style). But this recipe incorporates the best of both worlds: Butterbeer and Cake.
(amybites photo, not mine!)

Check it out here.

And it's Wednesday . . . . so here's to Friendly Wednesday over at Feeding Four!!!

Royal Wedding Fun

I don't know if anyone else out there is as excited about the upcoming Royal Wedding as I am, but boy am I ever excited!  I can totally remember getting up and watching Princess Diana's wedding, as well as Fergie's wedding with my mom.  Maybe it's because my family has always had an interest in British life and royalty.  Maybe it's just because it's cool to see a beautiful woman become a real-life princess.  Or maybe, just maybe it's because WAY WAY WAY WAY back in our family line, I had an ancestor with royal blood!  (Mom found that out once doing geneology - My gram wore a tiara for the rest of the week and proclaimed that she always knew she was royal!!!! )

But whatever the reason, I am beyond stoked to get up early and watch as Will and Kate take their vows this Friday.  I plan on taping the wedding as well, so whatever I miss while getting the kids ready for school, packing lunches and the like, I can see later.

In fact, Thing #1 and I are planning a Royal Tea Party and Wedding Watching Party for Friday night (or maybe Saturday morning, depending on how Mr. CrazyLife feels about it!)

We're going to dress up and wear hats.  Drink tea.  Have tea cakes and sandwiches.  Maybe we'll even make some "royal" cupcakes like these from the Disney Family Fun site.

On the Disney Family Fun site there are lots of other fun activities to do with your children to celebrate the Royal Wedding.  How about a Kate Middleton paper doll dress-up?  Or print out a tiara like the one Kate may wear in the wedding for your little princesses to wear at your celebration.  It's a definite must-see if you are planning a royal celebration!

There's fun stuff on there for us moms as well: Check out the fabulous headdresses and shoes.  Bake up some of the princess cookies and cakes.  Book a romantic get-away.  Learn how to feel like a princess every day.  It's all on there.  Plus, check out the Disney Princess inspired wedding dresses - they are to die for!!  If I was getting married again, I'd totally pick out the Belle dress.

Linking up to Friendly Wednesdays at Scraps of Life and Feeding Four

Post-Race Funk

Since I came back from the half marathon, I've been in sort of a post-race funk.  I don't want to go outside and walk or run.  I don't want to go to work.  I don't want to workout.  I just want to sit down and read a book and play with my kids.  I just can't quite get into the swing of things again!

I'm feeling a bit like this little guy:

I've got to get out of this funk.

My house really needs a good once over.  Especially since I had three sick kids this past week.  I've done more laundry this week alone than I did all of last month!!  Ick.  Ick. Ick.  And while I got a good start on spring cleaning last weekend, well it was put on hold with the sick kids.  Need to get back on top of that.

I really need to get out and walk more.  The snow and ice just really deters me.  I'm so ready for spring.

My garden is covered in huge piles of snow.  I keep dreaming of going out there and digging in the dirt and planting seeds and growing good food.  But then I wake up and there's all the snow.

I'm tired, too.  My left side has been numb for the past week and a half.  It's still functional, but numb.  I keep dropping things.  I can't move fast.  I'm exhausted.  And I keep forgetting where I put things and what I want to say.  I drop words.

The kids are driving me crazy.  Thing #2 has hit my limit of what I can handle alone.  His behavior is WAY out of control and I don't know what to do to help him.  He doesn't do it at home, just at school.

We're running tight financially this month with lots of things coming due and a lot of extras coming up.  Dance costumes, extra mortgage payment, things for the cows, extra wood for building projects, bathroom projects, three school fundraisers, etc.  Too many things due at one time.

Feeling a bit unconnected with the world.  I just want to stay in my own house and do my own thing and not deal with anyone or anything outside it.

See?

Grumpy.

That's my name.

Okay . . . pity party over.  I've got to get up and make some sunshine happen!!!

Bullet Points

Fly by post - this week has been totally crazy!!!!

*No meal plan for this week.  We had a snow day on Monday and then I'm leaving tonight and while I had a basic plan in my head, it never made it to paper (or blog for that matter!)  Plus, I'm pretty sure that Mr. CrazyLife will ditch the meal plan when he's home alone with four children in favor of KFC and pizza delivery!  =)

*Having a great time at work this week - we're playing games!!!  I love playing music games with my kids.  They learn and retain so much more.  Plus - well, it's fun!

*Tonight I hop on a plane and head to Florida!!!!  I cannot wait!!!!!  Both for the trip and for meeting my long-time online friend Meredith!

*I'm nervous about the Princess Half this weekend.  I know I can do it and I'm excited, but still a bit nervous!!!

*I've never flown by myself before, so I'm a wee bit nervous about that too.  I know it will go well, but still . . .

*When I kissed the kids goodbye this morning before leaving for work, Thing #1 asked me to bring her something back from Disney.  I sighed, expecting the worst.  Her request?  A picture of the castle all lit up at night!

*Still having school issues with Thing #2.  He's a challenge for sure, but we're feeling like his teacher is just looking for trouble from him now.  Mr. CrazyLife is calling the school this morning to head things off.  *sigh*  The challenges of having gifted children.

*Last night the little kids were asking for homework again.  So we did addition flash cards with Thing #3.  Color/Shape flash cards with Thing #4.  Then I had some valentine sweethearts left over.  We did an estimating sheet and then a color graph with them.  I have some pics that I'll post on a later preschooling post.  The big kids did them too.

*I almost forgot to pack my swimming suit for the trip!!!  Tragedy!!  Thankfully, I saw this morning as I was leaving the house and it made it into the bag.

*Working on party planning for Things #1 and #4.  The Dora post above is still going, although we may have to make some time changes as my SIL is planning on coming in for the party.  Thing #1 wants a slumber party - is it insane to have a bunch of 8 year old girls in for a slumber party?

*Gotta run. . . . my 5th graders are waiting!!!  See you on the flip side with a complete Disney and Race recap!!!!!

Happy Friday!!!

Happy Friday!

It's cold. It's snowy and blowy. And usually I wouldn't be thrilled about those things (unless they meant a snow day!) However, tomorrow we have a youth group event called Magic Carpeting. And if you remember from last year, that is also known as "extreme sledding." My FIL hooks up a conveyor belt to the back of his tractor, we all jump on, and he does donuts out in the field. And we try to hang on. It's great if you're at the top of the belt. But if you're at the end....look out! You can fall off whipping around the field . . . or the person at the top lets go and takes everyone out like dominoes! So much fun!!!

And the pond is ready for ice skating . . . so our skates are coming with and I'm heading that way!! (It's much safer than holding on to a slick, snowy conveyor belt, anyhow!)

And I'm just looking forward to a nice weekend.

And praying for more snow on Sunday, because a snow day Monday would be just what this Momma needs!!!

Punctuation

Let's talk for a moment about something we all hate to talk about (and deal with.)  You know what I'm talking about.  AF.  Our lovely monthly visitor.  The thing we all look forward to getting when we're 12 and hate by the time we're 13.  Yep.....that punctuation....the period.

This is on my mind today because my lovely little friend decided to suprise me a whole WEEK early this month!  This almost never happens to me and it really set me off.  So a bit of a rant and some ideas to help "green up" a very personal issue.

Now, let me start off by saying that I have been a bit blessed in this area.  I didn't start until I was 12 and my periods have always been fairly light and short and absolutly regular.  But I still hate dealing with it.  I've always hated the feeling of those paper sanitary pads.  They itch.  They rub funny.  They are crinkly.  And they are expensive.  Plus, I hate the thought of all that "stuff" sitting around in a landfill for almost ever.  Between disposible diapers and disposible sanitary napkins, future archeologists are going to make some interesting conclusions about our society!

So, partly in tune with trying to "green" up my life and partly due to the suggestions of friends and partly just to see what the fuss was all about.  So I tried  "Mama Cloth" and they have changed my life....one month at a time!

I first used cloth pads postpartum with my second child, six years ago.  I had bought some from a local cloth diaper store.  They were the only brand she carried (and they are still my favorite brand).  At first, they did feel a bit bulky, but I got used to that quickly.  What amazed me the most was that my postpartum period (hah, what a pun!) lasted a much shorter time than with my first child.  And then once my ummm, punctuation returned 8 months later, it too was shorter and lighter than ever before.  And each month since has been the same.  My periods went from lasting 5-7 days with a medium flow to about 3-4 days with a light flow.  It's amazing.

Now, I don't know why this is.  There are the rumors, of course.  Companies put some kind of chemical into the pads/tampons to make you bleed more.  Therefore you need more of their product, yada yada yada.  I'm not sure I buy it.  But whatever the reason.....I've found it to be true.  Cloth pads make my time of the month last a shorter time and a much lighter time.

It seems strange to us to think of using cloth pads, I'm sure.  I mean, you never see this on TV, right?  But forever, up until about 50 years ago, this was the norm.  Using something disposible would have been unthinkable.  I mean, how did Eve take care of her monthly issue?  Or the pilgrims?  Or Queen Elizabeth the first?  No matter what, all women throughout time have had to deal with this.  And they all did it without the use of something disposible.  So maybe it isn't all that weird afterall?  Check out this link from the Menstration Museum.

There are all kinds of Mama Cloth out there.  Tons of WAHM 's make them and sell them.  You'll have to try a bunch to find what you like.  There are also more natural internal systems, the Diva Cup and the Keeper among others.  I personally love the Happy Heiny brand and Luna Pads, but have a bunch of others as well.  They come in all sizes and shapes, with or without wings, snap or velcro or pin closure, pillowcase style or not.  Find what works for you.

Now the question arises of what one does with the pads after use and before washing.  Or what to do when on the go.  Or just how to deal with the cloth at all.  Here's what I do.

I keep a small, covered bucket in my master bathroom.  After I change a used pad, I set it in the bucket, which contains cold water.  I soak the pads for the duration of my AF (usually 3-4 days).  I then dump the water into a smaller container.  The soaked pads are thrown into whatever load of laundry is ready to run, although I do usually throw them in with towels or sheets.  The water I save for watering plants (my roses love it!), but I do use it quickly.  Mr. CrazyLife really doesn't like this part of the process.  I do not dry the pads in the dryer.  I hang them dry.  It's not complicated and aside from some strange looks from your family members the first few times, not a huge issue anywhere.

There are other options out there as well....diva cups, moon cups and the like.  I've never tried them, but have heard rave reviews.  Just not my thing, I guess.

So for anyone out there sharing my pain right now, look into some greener, cleaner, healthier options....you'll be glad you did!

Someday My Prince Will Come

It just won't be this prince!

Okay, so it's a bit silly.  I mean, he's a lot younger than me.  He lives a long long way away from where I do.  We come from totally different worlds.  Oh, not to mention that I'm already married and all that jazz.

But it could have happened, right?
*laugh*

This week Buckingham Palace announced the engagement of Prince William to his long-time girlfriend, Kate Middleton.  I couldn't be more excited!  It may be weird, but  have this strange fascination with all things royal.  I think it comes from my mother and grandmother because they both do as well.  Perhaps because my Gram looks strangely exactly like Queen Elizabeth II?  Or because when doing genology, my mother traced one of our family lines back to a royal line 100s of years ago?  Whatever the reason, I love the royals!

And Wills gave her his mother's ring.  That is an amazing ring!!

I remember watching Diana and Charles's wedding as a child and the beauty and pagentry of it is still stuck in my mind.  Diana was such a beautiful bride.  As will Kate be.  The carriage ride, the big poufy AMAZING dress, the flowers, the music.  Everything.

And of course, being second in line to the throne pretty much garentees a wedding just as big and elaborate and beautiful.  I can't wait to see it all.  I'm very happy for them both.  They seem quite content and happy with their decision.

I do hope that their mariage is more successful than his parents and other relatives have been.  I really think that both Diana and Sarah really didn't know what they were getting into.  They were both so young and their courtships were so short.  And since Kate has been around for the long haul, hopefully she has an idea of what exactly she is getting into.

I think they make a beautiful couple, yes?

I do wish them a very happy and healthy marriage, with wonderful years to follow!

And after all......there's another prince to keep in mind....who would forget Handsome, Hottie Prince Harry?

It's possible.......
*laugh*
